Top Visual Novels of 2025 / Upcoming Visual Novels of 2026

2025 has been a quieter year than some for more prominent English visual novel releases, but there have certainly still been some outstanding ones. As always, the NookGaming team can’t claim to have read every 2025 visual novel release, but we’ve certainly read a lot of them between us and want to both share our personal highlights of the year and mention a few that we’re hoping to see in 2026.

As always with GOTY lists (or VNOTY in this case), these choices are subjective, and only based on the visual novels we have personally played. It may later be updated to add in a few more titles, particularly for the later releases of 2025 that we haven’t completed yet, so positions may shift.

Angelic Chaos Reboot (Tenshi Souzou) - top visual novels of 2025

5 – Angelic☆Chaos RE-BOOT!

Yuzusoft titles are always an amusing read that are a cut above when it comes to visuals and voices, and Angelic☆Chaos RE-BOOT! (Tenshi☆Souzou RE-BOOT!) is no different. It’s full of silly interactions between the cast, lovable heroines that caused plenty of fan discussion over who their favorite is, and a plot about demons from another world who reincarnated into humans that I enjoyed, despite some having issues with it. On top of that, it has one of the best Yuzusoft side-heroine routes in Orie’s, though sadly, the other side-heroine’s route wasn’t exactly a highlight.

The international release of this reincarnation romance comedy was long-awaited and ended up missing out on a Steam release. It’s a pity, if not a huge surprise considering the school setting and the central issue revolving around the protagonist losing the ability to ‘rise to the occasion’ of the 18+ scenes. Still, I’m happy that it got its release eventually, but it’s a pity that only the core visual novel audience is aware of it due to the more limited storefronts.

The Pillagers of Raillore - top visual novels of 2025

4 – The Pillagers of Raillore

The Pillagers of Raillore (Raillore no Ryakudatsusha) was my first foray into the 3rdEye lineup of visual novels, and while I have heard about how their games are heavy on action scenes production-wise (hello, Sorcery Jokers!) I was not expecting the optic adventure this title had lying in wait for me. Every interaction between the story’s characters, even mundane everyday conversations, make use of stylistic panel-type visual assets that are reminiscent of manga or comic book presentations. It felt like the game was pushing the limits of what a visual novel can do, creating dynamic sights for what otherwise is a mostly static storytelling medium.

The story is set in a world where supernatural powers are commonplace among the populace. Collectively called Dunamis, they are both a boon to the productivity of their society and a danger because of their destructive potential. Raillore focuses on characters called Snatchers, or people with Dunamis that specifically take instead of create, and their struggle against a society that mostly disregards their existence. The story is pretty simplistic for most of the game’s runtime, and while it does get a bit interesting because of the complexities it introduces in the second half, there’s barely any time dedicated to actually capitalizing on expanding it.

What makes it stand out from other entries in 2025 though is the sheer amount of effort put into its visual presentation; there’s so much eye candy that flies through the screen that it pretty much feels like you’re watching an anime. They emulate motion so well with the resources available to them that reading it is a one of a kind experience. Definitely worth picking up if you want to see how creative visual novels can get.

Summer Pockets REFLECTION BLUE - top visual novels of 2025

3 – Summer Pockets REFLECTION BLUE

One of the most anticipated releases in 2025, Summer Pockets REFLECTION BLUE is part of Key’s longstanding culture of releasing expanded versions of their base games a year or two after their initial release. With how well-received this visual novel was in general, it would have been weird to not have it as part of our top five. It adds four new routes, one totally new character, and additional achievements that completionists can scratch their heads with as they try to clear the game in its entirety. With charismatic characters, a lovable artstyle that’s distinctly Key, and plotlines that just go for the jugular no matter what, you can never go wrong picking Summer Pockets when it comes to a recommendation from this year’s releases.

The story revolves around Takahara Hairi, a teenage boy struggling with his own feelings of inadequacy, and his memorable summer vacation in the island of Torishirojima. Here he meets new friends, experiences romance, and slowly, but surely, begins to learn how to move forward with his insecurities. Honestly, the best part of Summer Pockets is probably its common route. The members of the cast have such good chemistry with each other that there’s barely any lull in-between scenarios to make the game feel boring. I do feel like many of the routes are very hit or miss in terms of their pacing and resolutions, but none of them feel offensively bad when you finish them. With how much it offers to you in terms of story and production, alongside a very relatable motif, there’s so much to love about Summer Pockets that it’s easy to forgive most of its flaws.

Now if only they included an additional CG for that specific Kyoko and Umi scene, then maybe it’d be higher…

Sickly Days and Summer Traces - top visual novels of 2025

2 – Sickly Days and Summer Traces

I didn’t expect that Sickly Days and Summer Traces (Ecchi de Ichizu na Doinaka Nii-sama to, Koshikiyukashii Byoujaku Imouto) would be good enough to be listed among the best of 2025 when starting, but it definitely deserves its place on this list. Its original title of “A Sex-obsessed Brother in the Country, and his Traditional, Sickly Sister” didn’t do it any favors. As the original title implies, there is a lot of adult content in this visual novel, and it’s both incredibly varied and well-crafted, but it goes far beyond that.

It’s a story of a younger sister and an older brother who never really had the chance to spend time together between hospitalization and work, until circumstances changed. It’s not really about the pursuit of physical intimacy, but more about finding happiness together, with plenty of sweet and romantic moments along the way. It even has reflections on family issues, on how life can suddenly end, and on how the siblings both need each other to achieve happiness. It doesn’t hurt that the artwork is absolutely beautiful.

HENPRI - top visual novels of 2025

1 – HENPRI (Hentai Prison)

As someone who had no experience with Qruppo or any of the Nukitashi games, going blindly into Hentai Prison, on HenPri for short, was a surreal experience. I was expecting a visual novel chocked full of explicit sexual content given its title, and although the dialogue and setting is as crude as it can possibly be, the story itself stands on par with a lot of narrative-focused giants we know and love. It is a moving tale of freedom and self-expression, individuality, and almost ironically, love.

The plot revolves around the tribulations faced by Minato Shuichiro, a young man who gets imprisoned for repeat exhibitionism offenses. He gets sent to Tulip Prison, a legendary correctional precinct located in a remote island that’s said to be inescapable. Inside the prison premises, Shuichiro faces two choices: to change for the “better”, or “survive” as himself. It’s a great story about self-discovery; the dialogue is simple and charmingly eccentric, but the messaging is incredibly consistent. Each route has its clear focal point related to Shuichiro’s own personal development, and the overall conclusion is satisfying because of how every aspect of the story feeds into each other. It’s an incredible love letter to something very close to a visual novel reader’s heart: erotica.

Oh, and it has lots of H-scenes at the end as a reward. Win-win!

Rance 03 - top visual novels of 2025

Honorable Mention – Rance 03: The Fall of Leazas

It wouldn’t be a 2025 release if we didn’t include Rance, would it? Part of Alice Soft’s efforts to bring their older titles up to par with their modern releases, Rance 03: The Fall of Leazas (Rance 03 – Leazas Kanraku) is the last remake they’ve released for the beloved Rance series. It expands upon the original game’s (Rance III, 1991) story and bridges it better into the series’s current lore while improving upon Rance 01’s card-based dungeon crawler system. This turns it into a more customizable multiple party member system that has upgrades and progressions reminiscent of classic JRPGs. Of course, it also features a ton of adult content that incorporates the paradoxically light yet violent themes that the series is known for.

While the story is great and the gameplay is fantastic, Rance 03’s heavy reliance on its dungeon crawler segments as filler in between narrative segments makes the game feel closer to an erotic JRPG than a visual novel. Not to mention that Rance 03 is one of those games in the series that actually requires you to read the previous two installments to better appreciate it, as it directly builds upon the past events leading to its current setting. This is why despite being an excellent release overall, we’ve opted to dedicate a slot to it as an “honorable mention” instead to uphold the consistency of our list. Regardless, if you’re even a smidge interested in the series, I highly recommend playing this alongside the two other remakes that have been released. The world of Rance has so much to offer that one short glance doesn’t give justice to its depth as a series.

Upcoming Visual Novels of 2026

Actual release dates for visual novels tend to shift or not be announced until the last minute, so we can’t predict if visual novels will actually come out during 2026 or not, and there will be ones that haven’t been publicly announced yet. But we’ve taken the chance to list some of the titles that we’re looking forward to that may release during 2026.

To reiterate, inclusion in this list is not a confirmation that these visual novels will be released in 2026. These are not just based on announced release windows but also estimates and discussions with publishers where possible.

Ren'ai 0 Kilometer - upcoming visual novels of 2026

Ren’ai 0 Kilometer

ASa Project always brings silly situations with over-the-top comedy, and Ren’ai 0 Kilometer seems to be no exception. It’s a cohabitation comedy where Kyouichi is temporarily sent to live with his neighbor’s family of all girls, while one of their daughters is sent to live with his family of all boys. Childhood friends turn into temporary siblings, giving them the chance to grow closer than ever before.

Ren’ai 0 Kilometer is an older title, and it’s always nice to see these get localized. It is, however, being updated for its late-January 2026 release with “HD optimization”, along with multiple languages and presumably everything it needs to run on modern computers without issue. As well as being a title which looks like it’ll be a fun read, it brings hope that we may someday see some of the developer’s other older works in English.

Onii-chan Continue - upcoming visual novels of 2026

Onii-chan Continue!

Another year, another little sister visual novel. Onii-chan Continue! follows Hayato as he spoils his honor student sister, who lazes about playing video games behind closed doors. It’s been described as a fairly short slice-of-life story focusing on sweet moments and interactions, and I’ve seen quite a few positive comments on it from Japanese eroge fans online.

While this is the first title by developer Panmimi, there’s a lot of established talent behind this title. It’s directed and written by Nissy, who has worked on Tamayura Mirai, Kakenuke★Forward to Our Sparking Youth!, and Kinkoi: Golden Loveriche, all of which I thoroughly enjoyed. It’s illustrated by Pan, who hasn’t done much visual novel work but is a very popular illustrator. And it’s even got IOSYS onboard, who are well-known for their Touhou music.

anemoi - upcoming visual novels of 2026

anemoi

Against all odds, Key has been able to consistently release at least one new title every year since 2021. And for 2026, Japan is finally getting the full-priced game they’ve been teasing for more than two years: anemoi. And while the international release date isn’t yet known, we have high hopes it’ll be later in 2026, as it has already been announced for a Steam release.

The story is set in the rural town of Masumi, where the Hayakawa siblings decide to visit in preparation for the opening of a time capsule buried ten years ago. It features five romanceable heroines, all of whom have had their designs revealed alongside their voice actors and character backgrounds.

The development team features a lot of familiar names; Sayuki Shun, who has been working in various roles for Key since LOOPERS, is returning as the main director for anemoi. Alongside him, Hasama, Nijima Yuu, and Okamoto Manabu (who all previously served as the scenario writers for Summer Pockets) are once again reprising their roles as writers for the five main routes of the game. Fans will also surely recognize the beloved art styles of Na-Ga, Nagayama Yuunon, and Humuyun, who have helped tug at their heartstrings through their adorable yet emotionally gut-wrenching work in different Key games throughout the years. If you’ve liked most of their previous works, there’s no reason not to be excited for this one as well.

With so many talented people on board for the game, the opportunity to have a new long-form visual novel where you can just immerse yourself and be swept away by your emotions without noticing the passing of time is the ripest it has ever been. It’s almost time to cry ourselves again to sleep!
