Yomegami: My Sweet Goddess – Review

Yomegami: My Sweet Goddess! is a romantic comedy visual novel originally released by ALcot for Japanese audiences back in 2016, 9 years prior to the English release by JAST. The story is set in a fictional version of Japan where Gods and Devils exist unbeknownst to the majority of the human population. ALcot, as an eroge developer, is known for releasing multiple romcom titles that deal with a variety of fantastical themes ranging from mythological to even the extraterrestrial. Some of their available translated works include My Girlfriend is the President, Onigokko!, and Clover Day’s

ALcot is a very familiar name to me because one of their works, My Girlfriend is the President (also known as OsaDai) was one of my earliest exposures to the visual novel medium as a whole. In stark contrast to many other available titles that were largely story-driven with long, serious undertones, OsaDai was mostly mindless fun with a lot of gratuitous dialogue that just straight up acknowledged that most people reading it probably read it with the intention of getting down and dirty with its heroines. Although there were scenes that sometimes did tug at the reader’s heartstrings, the largely unapologetic way it just made everything explode for fun was pretty endearing. It’s the kind of enjoyment that, with a bit of self-awareness, gives you joy entirely separate from fulfillment that comes from a deep understanding of a story. It feels like the equivalent of literary play time!

Now given the opportunity to review a newer ALcot title, I’m very excited to meet another quirky cast of dumb, lovable characters that will surely talk about some of the more outrageous things I’ve seen in a long while. How well will ALcot’s degenerate humor hold up in 2025? Let’s prepare our divine judgement as we dive into the world of Yomegami: My Sweet Goddess!

Ascending to Heaven with Toast in my Mouth

Yomegami: My Sweet Goddess is set in the fictional city of New Masado Town, a place where gods, despite being largely absent from public consciousness, continue to perform miracles in silence. Narukawa Hayato, a young and healthy high school student, moves into the city in hopes of getting over some issues he encountered in their previous neighborhood. A modern-day demigod, he is the reincarnation of a devil named Angolmois who wreaked havoc in Heaven twenty years prior to the story. During that fateful battle, the Goddess of Rebirth Iris managed to seal Angolmois’ soul and conceived him as her own child. Despite this, due to possessing the devil’s soul, Hayato was banished by the gods from Heaven and was decreed to live amongst mortals on Earth. If he wanted to return to Heaven, he had to either live out his three-hundred-year sentence or do enough good deeds to offset his previous self’s sins.

One day, on the way home from some errands, a beautiful pink-haired girl who seems to be in a hurry accidentally bumps into Hayato. Thanks to the matchmaking skills of gravity, the girl pushes him down and accidentally gives him his first kiss. Finding himself dizzy from both the physical and emotional impact of the event, Hayato eventually composes himself and notices two men who appear to have been chasing the girl. Set on doing good, he confronts the two hoodlums and knocks the wind out of their sails. Unfortunately, the girl ends up telling him after that they were her acquaintances! As the consequences of his actions dawn on him, his ringtone plays to notify him of the good deed points that he lost. The road to Hell truly is paved with good intentions.

With cute, charming women tempting him in his everyday life, Hayato needs to be extra careful if he wants to get back to Heaven as soon as possible. Will his good nature allow him to end his sentence early? Or will the suspicious figures in the background take advantage of the devil’s powers sleeping within him? There’s a tough journey waiting for Hayato as he navigates through the whims of both mortals and gods in Yomegami: My Sweet Goddess!

The Virtuous Road is the Normie One

Yomegami: My Sweet Goddess! centers around Hayato’s efforts to do his required number of good deeds while creating meaningful relationships with the people around him as much as possible. Along the way, he gets pulled into a number of unraveling plots involving figures from Heaven that put him in tough spots when it comes to fulfilling his Heaven-mandated mission.

The game is average in terms of length (around 20 hours) and includes four heroine routes, reached through a number of choices (as outlined in our guide/walkthrough). Each route is mostly linear with one ending; the only choices you encounter within them are related to variations in CGs that are immediately unlocked after making your decision. Should you decide to replay the game after finishing it once, there’s also a convenient Scenario Select feature when starting a new game that lets you go straight to one of the heroine’s routes.

Surprisingly, the plot in Yomegami: My Sweet Goddess! comes together rather nicely. Despite having very heavy romcom elements that basically make the story sometimes feel like bonus content, the overall narrative of the game manages to deliver on the initial premise, albeit in a relatively convoluted way. Most of the dialogue hinges on exploiting the main character’s trait as a horny male teenager who happens to be on a holy pilgrimage back to Heaven. This helps create that semblance of character dignity that anchors the title and prevents it from turning into a full-blown nukige. So even if it regularly horny baits via the temptresses that the heroines are, it feels more like dirty banter meant for fans of otaku media that expect content of that nature and enjoy it.

The Gods Love Cliches and So Do I

Speaking of the heroines, Yomegami: My Sweet Goddess! features a total of four charming girls that serve as romantic interests for Hayato throughout the story. Of course, being a fantasy title with emphasis on Heaven as part of its setting, the cast is made up of a healthy mix of celestial beings and mortals that help create a fun dynamic both in its comedic sections and in its romance. One thing they explored in the setting that I really liked was the idea of reincarnation. Hayato’s status as a demigod with the soul of a devil causes the characters in the cast to treat him differently based on both their past and present relationship with him. Considering both of these factors makes Hayato’s interactions a bit unpredictable and introduces some complexity across routes.

As a romcom title, Yomegami: My Sweet Goddess! makes use of cliches that integrate well into the mortal-celestial setting. The cliches they chose don’t overlap each other in terms of traits and character influence, making each heroine and the way they approach their route feel individually unique. That being said, in terms of character arcs, I was pleasantly surprised to find that most of the heroines (save for one) have satisfying endings to their stories. They played off of the fantasy setting really well with the overarching conflict they set up, although the progression itself is kind of bumpy with the heavy emphasis on romcom scenes and, later in the story, mana attunement. They’re not incredible reads, but they keep you engaged well enough, even with all the random banter and quips they insert in the dialogue.

It’s Dependent on Context!

There is, however, one route that I felt was lacking in terms of its pacing and conclusion, which lessens the overall experience of Yomegami: My Sweet Goddess! It makes use of the same formula as the other routes, but perhaps due to having a different writer, the way the conflict plays into Hayato’s own struggle as the reincarnation of a devil feels largely detached from everything, despite its themes being one of the most relevant ones in substantiating his dualistic nature. The buildup was almost non-existent, and the payoff felt like what a cliffhanger ending at the end of a chapter would be, except it’s supposed to be the culmination of the heroine’s story.

Despite my misgivings, I would still consider the visual novel a fun enough title to pick up and read. In terms of story, it’s at least consistent in its themes with standout moments thanks to the convoluted way they weaved Hayato’s relationships with other characters. When it comes to the comedic moments, the use of outlandish comments to reset increasing tensions didn’t feel too awkward because of how well they execute their quips in line with the characters’ individual quirks. It blends really well into the overall slice-of-life vibe of the game as a frequent reminder that the characters are, in fact, adolescents at the peak of their interest in intimate physical relationships.

Down and Dirty Verbally and Intellectually

Speaking of comedy, Yomegami: My Sweet Goddess! is probably a hit-or-miss for people depending on their kind of humor. It relies heavily on sexual innuendos to elicit laughs from the audience, so if you’re at least an inch over the age of puberty, you might find the game a bit off-putting. That being said, for fans of girls who have incredibly dirty minds, this is that hidden treasure you’ve been waiting to encounter for a while now. Fully voiced with barely any censors, it’s honestly a treat hearing the girls speak their perverted fantasies as if it’s the most embarrassing thing they’ve ever done in their life and then a minute later the other one spouts out a line that lets the ships in the harbor sail out full mast. The amount of lines they dedicated to the male appendage is heartwarming, and honestly, what better way to appreciate the effort than by giving it your full (standing) attention.

In addition, the characters being self-aware of the absurdity of their lines makes the banter a lot better as well. By forcing the straight man role onto Hayato for most of these interactions, his dedication to his mission gets a regular spotlight in their dialogue and adds to the solid foundation of his character. The continuous influx of innuendo directly aimed at him also plays into his whole dualistic nature shtick as well, one that’s better highlighted when considering the adult content of the game.

It’s Not Just the Left Eye That Throbs

Perhaps unexpectedly, Yomegami: My Sweet Goddess features a sizable amount of adult scenes to compensate for its frequent teasing of the protagonist. Boasting a total of twenty-one (21) H-scenes, there’s a lot of space for fans of the title to enjoy intimate interactions with the game’s beautiful heroines. There’s also a healthy amount of variation in terms of the fetishes they cover, despite it being mostly a vanilla game, thanks to its fantastical setting that involves celestial beings. The scenes are of respectable length as well, lasting as long as fifteen (15) minutes, depending on how fast you read. Overall, if you’re a fan of getting to do the deed with gorgeous fictional anime women, then this game will serve you well.

That being said, there is a censored version of the game on Steam which opens the possibility of reading through it as if it were an all-ages title. Normally, I’d say that it’s fine to indulge in your censorship preferences for slice of life titles, but for Yomegami: My Sweet Goddess! specifically, or perhaps ALcot games in general, the nature of the work and the character interactions do get consummated through their sexual relations, which makes it a disservice to avoid the content. For Yomegami specifically, the adult scenes make frequent mention of Hayato’s dark energy being closely tied to his own arousal, and hence, his demeanor does slightly change during his rather frequent expressions of love with his chosen romantic interest. It’s an interesting tidbit of his character that I feel would be missed out on if you opt for the censored version, which feels like a waste considering the premise of the game’s story.

Art and Music

Yomegami: My Sweet Goddess! features a total of eighty unique CGs in the gallery, with thirty-six of them featuring explicit content (or HCGs for short). Additionally, the gallery features seventeen unique SD art graphics that each feature members of the cast in various situations.

The game has five artists in total, which explains the difference in art styles when comparing the heroines with each other. Despite this, the overall art style of the game manages to come together well enough for none of the characters to stick out weirdly. The style used for the game emphasizes large, round eyes with bright-colored hair that’s frequently seen in visual novels of this genre. Although overly emphasized in some areas, the heroines feel attractive enough at first glance for readers unaware of the story to give it a try anyway.

Besides the game’s cute art, the use of floating dialog boxes and angles helps create more visually dynamic scenes despite using mostly static assets. The slanting they’ve used on character sprites in particular sometimes add to the comedic effect of the scene because of its implication on their overall participation in the gag. Even with a few years under its belt, the game remains largely pleasant to the eyes to look at and read.

BGM list of Yomegami: My Sweet Goddess!

Yomegami: My Sweet Goddess! boasts a total of thirty-six soundtracks in its lineup, which is quite a respectable amount considering its length. It features heroine-specific tracks alongside the usual slice of life sets, which upon listening to after finishing the game for the first time, remain largely memorable despite how similar they sound to each other. They fit the overall relaxing vibe of the game as well, even with the more intense tracks such as Because I Love You and Until I Burn To Ash which play during pivotal scenes in the story. Most of the tracks were composed by Angel Note, a music production group with a large portfolio of works for titles under the visual novel genre. Overall, the tracks work nicely in the context of the scenes they play in, except maybe Bite My Lips, which sounds like a cafe track but plays during some of the heroines’ H-scenes. I found it a little bit out of place when considering the scene’s atmosphere.

Verdict

Yomegami: My Sweet Goddess! is a romantic comedy visual novel that dips into fantasy slash mythologically-inspired story elements to deliver a quirky yet heartwarming story of finding oneself. Set in modern Japan where gods continue to work miracles, it features themes of truth, interpersonal relationships, and difficult love by using humans and gods as mediums to represent the various challenges that Hayato encounters in his journey to manifest his own existence. Although sporting an interesting premise at first glance, much of the game’s strength lies in its continuous use of explosive energy-filled comedy scenes that make it hard to stay in a bad mood when reading its dialogue.

Despite being consistent in its narrative structure and liberal use of its setting, there are story segments that fall a bit short when compared to the other parts of the visual novel. Perhaps due to a change in the writer in charge or a misalignment in expectations, it feels lacking in stakes even with a conflict that’s largely relevant to Hayato’s own character arc. Although disappointing, it serves to blemish my overall impression of Yomegami by just a little bit, as the game is still at the end of the day tons of fun for audiences that like their dirty quips and jokes.

With a charming main cast of characters that’s sure to keep you giggling, Yomegami: My Sweet Goddess! is proof that at the end of the day, as long as you focus on what you’re good at, you’ll definitely be a hit for the right audience. For prospective readers of this title, be wary of frequent references to actions that might be foreign to you or appendages that you might prefer to keep under cover. Take time to finally relax and turn the brain off so that maybe, just maybe, you’ll find yourself having a heavenly good time.
